Get Ready for JesusWeen

JesusWeen poster

When Halloween rolls around next Monday, a group of Christians spread throughout Canada and the U.S. will be celebrating JesusWeen instead.  JesusWeen participants will be giving out Bibles and tracts and other “Christian gifts” to trick-or-treaters (“… when someone knocks on your door expecting candy, we prescribe you give a pocket size bible, Christian musical or teaching cd, Tracts, Poems, etc.”).  They will also be wearing white “to symbolize Righteousness and the love of God.”  Continue reading

Jesus as Fast-Acting Cleansing Agent

Here’s an interactive gospel tract that brands Jesus as a “quick-acting formula” that “gets tough sins out”—a play on the product claims of Tide laundry detergent.  (Click here, or on the image below, to scroll through the various pages of the “ad.”)

Gets Tough Sins Out

I’ve seen Jesus presented in this fashion numerous times:  Get rid of dirt instantly!  Just pour in some Jesus and he’ll clean you right up!  No need to worry about stains anymore!  While there is truth to these claims (the Bible even uses the language of our being washed “white as snow”), I think that they’re too reductionistic.  “With one sincere dose you can be free of those condemning soiled rags in your closet!” … Sort of, but not quite.   Continue reading

‘Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me’

Listen to this beautiful hymn adaptation recorded by Bifrost Arts on their 2009 album Come, O Spirit!. The words were written by Edward Hopper in 1871, and the new tune was written by Joseph Pensak and Isaac Wardell for this album, arranged by Isaac Wardell and John Totten. The vocalist is Laura Gibson.

Jesus, Savior, pilot me
Over life’s tempestuous sea;
Unknown waves before me roll,
Hiding rock and treacherous shoal.
Chart and compass come from Thee;
Jesus, Savior, pilot me.  Continue reading

‘Mourning to Morning’

“Thou has turned for me my mourning into dancing.  Thou has put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness, to the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent.  O Lord my God, I will give thanks unto thee forever.”  -Psalm 30:11-12

The following series of ceramic sculptures, titled Mourning to Morning, is by American artist Dorothy Gager.  She said that there was a time in her life when she had withdrawn from others and wrapped herself in woundedness, but then eventually, through the consolation of God’s Spirit, that woundedness became her dancing skirt.
